Over 400 students from various schools in Masindi District celebrated their graduation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at a ceremony held at the Education Hall. The event marked the conclusion of a three-month training program organized by St. Mary’s Untake Complex and Excel Boarding School.
Empowering Youth with Digital Skills
The chief guest, Rogers Byamukama, emphasized the importance of equipping young people with ICT skills in today’s digital age. “The world is moving towards digitalization, and ICT skills are essential in almost every field,” Byamukama said. He encouraged the graduates, who had completed Senior Four and Senior Six, to use their newly acquired skills productively and pursue further education whenever possible. Certificates were awarded to the graduates to recognize their achievement.
Diverse Training Modules
The director of St. Mary’s Untake Complex and Excel Boarding School, Goodman Faruku, highlighted the program’s focus on practical ICT skills, including training in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additionally, the program offered vocational training in hairdressing and liquid soap making, equipping students with entrepreneurial skills to help them generate income.
“We wanted to ensure that students leave with skills that not only prepare them for jobs but also enable them to create their own opportunities,” Faruku explained.
Encouragement from Leaders
Hon. Kasojo Ronald, Member of Parliament for Buruli County, urged graduates to build on their knowledge and consider further studies if the opportunity arises. “Parents should support their children in advancing their education. These skills are just the beginning,” he said.
Similarly, Hon. Kiiza Kenthy Nyandowha of Bujenje County encouraged the graduates to be proactive and innovative. “Don’t let these skills go to waste. Use them to find or create jobs,” he advised.
Graduates Reflect on the Experience
Natukunda Eva, a representative of the graduates, expressed gratitude for the training. “Our holiday has been well spent, and we’ve gained valuable knowledge in ICT. We are now ready to tackle any ICT-related job opportunities,” she said.
A Step Towards Digital Transformation
The graduation ceremony highlighted the growing recognition of ICT as a cornerstone of modern education and employment. With these skills, the graduates are poised to contribute to the digital transformation of their communities and beyond.
