Police in Masindi are investigating a shocking case of child torture after a 4-year-old boy, Opakrwoth Kennedy, was severely burned, allegedly by his own grandmother.
The incident, reported to Masindi Central Police Station on March 31, 2025, occurred when the suspect, 62-year-old Ajelinda Ongera, accused the child of eating food meant for supper. She allegedly beat him before forcing his hands into a fire the following morning, causing serious burns.
The child was rescued by Nyirach Maureen, the suspect’s daughter-in-law, who took him to the women’s councilor of Chongoyoma village. The case was then reported to the police, leading to Ongera’s arrest. She is currently detained at Masindi Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities have recorded witness statements and conducted a medical examination of the victim. Harkiza Julius, the regional police commander of Bunyoro sub-region, urged the public to protect children and condemned all forms of child abuse.
“Torture is a serious crime punishable under Ugandan law. We must work together to prevent such cases and ensure justice is served,” he stated.
Police are continuing investigations to ensure full accountability in the case.
