A South Sudanese woman has taken social media by storm after publicly celebrating her husband’s second marriage, igniting a wave of reactions across the region.
Josephine Abyei Tong Akech shared a heartfelt message on Facebook congratulating her husband on marrying a second wife, calling it a moment of “utmost happiness” for their family.

“Congratulations my husband for bringing us our second wife,” she wrote in the now-viral post. Her words, accompanied by a photo of the couple, drew thousands of comments and shares within hours, sparking intense online debate over polygamy, gender roles, and cultural norms.
In a vibrant ceremony attended by close friends and family, the man proposed to his professional runway model wife.

Polygamy is legally recognized and socially accepted in many parts of South Sudan. However, Abyei’s public endorsement of her husband’s decision — delivered with apparent pride and joy — surprised many, especially in an era where women’s rights and monogamy are increasingly discussed topics.

Supporters praised Abyei for her composure and family-first attitude, calling her a symbol of traditional values and “true wife material.” Critics, on the other hand, questioned whether such acceptance promotes unequal gender dynamics and discourages women’s empowerment.

Abyei has not responded further, but her post continues to circulate widely, drawing attention from both local and international audiences.
Her statement adds a new dimension to ongoing conversations about marriage practices in South Sudan, and has turned her into an unexpected voice in the evolving discourse on modern relationships.
