Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Uganda has launched a new Mortgage Finance solution aimed at expanding access to affordable home ownership, boosting real estate investment and helping more Ugandans build long-term wealth through property ownership.
The new financing solution was unveiled at Emerald Residency in Mutungo, Nakawa-Kampala, under the theme, “The Wealth Welfare Equation: Deploying Structured Mortgage Capital to Drive Institutional Real Estate Investment and Corporate Home Ownership.”
The initiative comes at a time Uganda’s housing demand continues to rise, with the country facing a housing deficit estimated at more than 2.4 million units.
Annual demand for housing is projected between 210,000 and 300,000 units, a figure expected to increase further by 2030 due to rapid urbanisation and population growth.
DTB Uganda said the mortgage solution is designed to address some of the biggest barriers limiting home ownership, including high financing costs, short loan repayment periods and limited access to long-term capital.
Through the new offering, the bank will provide structured, long-term financing to property developers to support the construction of quality residential housing. The move is expected to reduce delays in real estate projects, increase housing supply and encourage investment in Uganda’s growing property market.
The bank has also introduced customised corporate mortgage schemes that will enable employers to support their employees in acquiring homes through affordable financing arrangements.
Speaking at the launch, DTB Uganda Managing Director Godfrey Ssebaana said housing remains a critical foundation for financial security and wealth creation.
“As DTB, we believe housing is a foundation for financial security and long-term wealth creation. Through structured mortgage financing, we are committed to empowering developers to build with confidence while creating a pathway for individuals and corporate employees to own homes, thus making property ownership more accessible to more Ugandans,” Ssebaana said.
The Chief Guest, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Judith Nabakooba, welcomed the initiative, saying partnerships between government, financial institutions and private developers are critical in addressing Uganda’s housing challenge.
“Uganda’s rapidly urbanising population presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Expanding access to affordable housing will require stronger collaboration between government, financial institutions and private developers. Initiatives such as DTB’s Mortgage Finance solution will play an important role in mobilising long-term capital, increasing housing supply and helping more Ugandans own decent homes,” Nabakooba said.
For years, many Ugandan households have relied on incremental construction, gradually building homes over extended periods due to limited access to affordable mortgage financing.
DTB Uganda’s latest intervention seeks to change this by offering longer-tenure financing options and working with credible developers to expand access to completed and quality housing.
The bank said the mortgage solution will not only support individual home ownership but also strengthen Uganda’s real estate sector by unlocking institutional investment and creating opportunities across construction, property development and related industries.
As Uganda’s urban population continues to grow, financial institutions are increasingly expected to play a bigger role in providing innovative financing solutions that bridge the gap between housing demand and supply.
DTB Uganda’s mortgage initiative positions the bank as a key player in supporting affordable housing development and enabling more Ugandans to turn home ownership aspirations into reality
