In the heart of Uganda, a business empire once stood as a testament to entrepreneurial brilliance. But today, the legacy of one of Uganda’s most celebrated businessmen, Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige—BMK—is on the brink of collapse.
BMK, a self-made entrepreneur, built a vast business empire spanning hospitality, real estate, and trade. Hotel Africana, his flagship investment, remains a beacon of his success. But since his passing in 2021, his empire has been engulfed in bitter family feuds and legal battles.
This is not an isolated case. Across Uganda, history tells a grim tale—where the demise of a business patriarch triggers family wrangles, leading to the downfall of once-thriving enterprises.
BMK’s eldest son, Ali Muwanga Kibirige, recently lost a Court of Appeal case over a prime property in Buziga. The ruling grants Yako Bank the authority to sell it, as part of a loan dispute. Ali claims the loan was acquired fraudulently by his younger brother, Haruna Kalule Muwanga.
But this is just one of many conflicts. Another property, a matrimonial home on Upper Naguru Road, has become a battleground. Ali Muwanga is suing his siblings and stepmother, alleging that they secretly mortgaged it to Equity Bank.
The Kibirige family’s troubles mirror a worrying trend in Uganda. When Andrew Kasagga, also known as Zzimwe, passed away in 2010, his construction empire crumbled. Godfrey Mabirizi’s real estate empire met a similar fate. Could BMK’s legacy be next?

A dispute over a plot of land in Kisenyi pits BMK’s family against businessman John Bosco Muwonge, who claims to have bought it in 2013. These prolonged legal battles have left key assets in limbo, their value dwindling.
What we see in BMK’s case is a lack of clear succession planning. Family businesses in Uganda need stronger governance structures to ensure stability.
Despite the turmoil, one jewel of the empire remains intact—Hotel Africana. For now, it stands resilient, a beacon of BMK’s vision. But for how long?
The fate of BMK’s empire hangs in the balance. Will his family reconcile and preserve his legacy? Or will another Ugandan business dynasty fade into history? Only time will tell.
