Peruth Chemutai has become the first Ugandan woman to ever win an Olympic medal, gold at that, having finished first in Heat 1 in the 3000m steeplechase.
This is after posting 9:10.51 to qualify for the final on Tuesday with a chance to defend her title in Paris.
She has showcased her dominance and secured a strong position for the finals.
At the Stade de France, Chemutai went to the front of the pack almost immediately and never let up in a confident performance.
She crossed the finish ahead of Kenya’s Faith Cherotich, the 2023 world bronze medalist.
Chemutai admits that she faces tough competition from athletes from Kenya, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, USA, among other countries who have tremendously improved in the race.
She says saying a prayer to God every day is her source of inspiration.
