Recent developments in the investigation of 23-year-old Martha Ahumuza Murari’s death have revealed that poisoning was not the cause. Ahumuza collapsed at Mezo Noir Bar in Kololo on March 21 and later died at Kampala Hospital.
A preliminary report from the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL) in Wandegeya indicates that toxicology analyses found no traces of poison in samples from Ahumuza’s internal organs. Forensic experts employed chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques to reach this conclusion.
Relatedly, the Police report states that while in the manager’s office, Ahumuza and Mugabo engaged in sexual intercourse. “During or immediately after intercourse, Ahumuza became unconscious on the couch,” it states. At around 3:30 am, Mugabo was seen frantically making phone calls.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that both postmortem and toxicology reports have been completed and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal guidance.
The DPP recommended releasing the prime suspects, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at Mezo Noir, and his brother Joseph Kalenzi, on police bond as investigations continue.

Details of the postmortem report remain confidential, shared only with the deceased’s family.
Investigations revealed that Ahumuza arrived at Mezo Noir around 11 p.m. on March 21 to meet Mugabo. They proceeded to the manager’s office, which lacks CCTV surveillance. There, Ahumuza reportedly collapsed. Mugabo and Kalenzi transported her to Kampala Hospital, where she was placed on life support and later died.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ahumuza’s death, with further forensic analyses underway. The public awaits additional findings to provide clarity on this tragic incident.
