By Tina Wamala, Immediate Past President – Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU)
Taking the oath of office is more than a ceremonial gesture—it is a defining moment that marks the beginning of a leader’s commitment to service, integrity, and transformational impact. It signals the readiness to translate vision into action and to leave behind a legacy that not only honors the past but also inspires the future.
When I assumed the presidency of the Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) in 2023, I became the fourth female—and twelfth overall—leader to serve since the association’s founding in 1976. Stepping into this role was not merely about occupying a leadership position, but about charting a clear, inclusive, and purpose-driven path for the future of the profession.
My tenure was defined by strategic clarity and relentless execution. We revived the PRAU Excellence Awards, reaffirming our commitment to celebrating outstanding public relations campaigns and practitioners.
A flagship mentorship programme was launched to support emerging professionals, pairing them with seasoned experts to help them navigate the ever-evolving communication landscape.
Capacity building was a cornerstone of our strategy. Through initiatives such as the National PR Symposium, the PRAU Bootcamp, masterclasses, and webinars, we reinforced PRAU’s presence at key industry and policy platforms. These efforts were not just about visibility—they were about influence, relevance, and empowerment.
But beyond programs and accolades, my leadership was deeply personal. It was shaped by years of experience in both the public and private sectors and guided by a philosophy rooted in service, collaboration, and resilience.
Leadership, in my view, transcends titles—it is about responsibility, intention, and the courage to create meaningful change.
For women aspiring to leadership, preparation and competence are vital. Professional development was the hallmark of my presidency. We forged strategic partnerships that opened doors for our members to engage with international PR experts and platforms, proudly showcasing Ugandan excellence on global stages.
One of the proudest moments of my journey was participating in Journey to the Boardroom, a transformative corporate governance programme that sharpened my boardroom acumen and broadened my leadership perspective. It was a powerful reminder that PR professionals deserve a seat at the highest tables—and that we bring valuable, strategic insight to boardroom decisions.
The pursuit of excellence remains PRAU’s guiding star, and it continues to resonate with me long after my term. I am honored to stand among Ugandan women who are breaking barriers and leading boldly in governance and decision-making spaces. I hope to inspire more women to claim their place—not just as leaders defined by gender, but as visionaries driven by purpose.
Leadership is a journey of intentional service. Every step we take contributes to the legacy we leave behind. As I continue to serve as PRAU’s Immediate Past President, I remain committed to mentoring, advocating, and uplifting others. The future is bright—especially when more women rise to lead not just with ambition, but with vision and heart.
