African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has raised a record US$1.5 billion through a dual-tranche Eurobond, marking its largest-ever public bond issuance and signalling renewed investor confidence in Africa’s long-term economic prospects despite a challenging global financing environment.
The senior unsecured Reg S/144A benchmark bond is Afreximbank’s first US dollar public bond issuance since July 2021. It comprises two equal tranches of US$750 million each: a 5.5-year bond maturing in January 2032 and a 10-year bond maturing in July 2036.
The offering drew overwhelming interest from institutional investors across the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and the United States, with orders reaching US$3.8 billion—more than double the amount sought. The strong demand enabled the bank to tighten pricing by 37.5 basis points on both tranches, resulting in final yields of 6.25% for the shorter-dated bond and 7.125% for the longer maturity.
The successful fundraising highlights growing international appetite for African credit and reinforces Afreximbank’s position as one of the continent’s most trusted issuers in global capital markets.
“This successful issuance shows the confidence that investors continue to place in Afreximbank and in Africa’s growth story,” said Chandi Mwenebungu, the bank’s Managing Director, Treasury and Markets, and Group Treasurer.
“For us, this is a clear sign that the market continues to believe in Afreximbank’s work and in Africa’s economic prospects. Our role remains to connect capital to the opportunities that will drive trade, industrialisation and growth across the continent,” he added.
The transaction also marks Afreximbank’s return to the US dollar bond market after diversifying its funding strategy in recent years through Samurai bond issuances in 2024 and 2025 and a Panda bond issued in 2025.
HSBC Bank plc served as Global Coordinator, while Standard Bank of South Africa, Standard Chartered Bank, Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft and MUFG Securities EMEA acted as Joint Lead Managers and Joint Bookrunners.
The successful issuance strengthens Afreximbank’s funding base as it continues financing trade, industrialisation and infrastructure projects across Africa, while demonstrating that international investors remain willing to back institutions seen as central to the continent’s economic transformation.
