The Electoral Commission Chairman, Justice Byabakama has reiterated the importance of peaceful elections, and the media’s role in promoting fair elections and accurate information.
His remarks come during a media dialogue organized by the commission attended by media representatives including journalists, media owners, and media trainers, at Royal Suites Hotel, Kampala, in the build up to the General Elections activities.
He has also condemned violence and has appealed to various political actors to adhere to the Commission’s guidelines in order to ensure harmony during the exercise.
In regard to the update of the nation on the electoral program, currently the commission is overseeing the demarcation of electoral zones.
Simon Byabakama has continued to appeal to the government to consider and approve the creation of new administrative units in a timely manner, so that the electoral program and budget are not destabilized.
According to the program, demarcation of the electoral areas will be done by the end of July 2024, and a general update of the National Voters’ Register by January 2025.
Nomination of candidates for the 2026 Presidential campaigns are set to take place between 2nd October and 3rd October 2025.
Elections are set for January 12 to February 9, 2026.
