PostBank Uganda has achieved a significant milestone with its agricultural loan book growing by 70% over the past four years. The loan book, which stood at Ushs. 107 billion in 2021, has seen substantial growth, driven by a combination of favorable lending rates, government support, and strategic initiatives by the bank.
The agricultural sector is a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy, employing approximately 68% of the country’s workforce and contributing 24% to the national GDP and 35% to export earnings in the 2022/23 financial year. Given the sector’s extensive value chain, affordable financing is crucial for enabling participation at various stages, making agricultural loans among the top-performing products in Uganda’s banking sector.
Julius Akais, Supervisor of Agriculture and Partnerships at PostBank Uganda, attributes the impressive growth to the bank’s tailored financial products aimed at specific agricultural value chains, such as coffee, poultry, cattle keeping, and grain trade. The bank has also focused on financial literacy initiatives, rural branch expansion, and mobile banking services to better serve farmers and agribusinesses.
“As a bank committed to fostering prosperity for Ugandans, we have designed products that not only meet our customers’ needs but also support their growth throughout the different phases of agricultural production,” Akais said.
He highlights the bank’s recent financial literacy training for over 150 cassava farmers in Arua District, conducted in partnership with the Federation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (FMSE), as an example of these efforts.
PostBank’s success has also been bolstered by strong partnerships with key stakeholders, including ACELI Africa and aBi Development Limited, as well as the adoption of technology to facilitate easier access to financial products for agricultural clients. The bank’s role in the government’s Agricultural Credit Facility, which offers loans with interest rates as low as 12% per annum, has further strengthened its position in the market.
“The commercialization of agriculture through financing will continue to be critical in enhancing the sector’s performance, enabling those involved in the value chain to produce high-quality products for both local and regional markets,” Akais remarks
PostBank Uganda, regulated by the Bank of Uganda, remains a leading force in the agricultural financing sector, helping to drive economic growth and prosperity across the nation.
