Rujumbura County Member of Parliament and Minister of Security, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi, has officially announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2026 general elections, under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
The 74-year-old veteran politician says this will be his final term in office, citing the need to “complete what he started” as the key motivation for his decision.
Muhwezi, a seasoned legislator and former bush war fighter, made the announcement ahead of the highly anticipated NRM party primaries, scheduled for July 16.
The primaries will determine the party’s flag bearers across all elective positions, setting the stage for a competitive race in the months leading up to the 2026 general elections.
“I have unfinished work in Rujumbura that I am determined to complete. This will be my last term in active politics, and I seek the trust of my people one more time,” Muhwezi stated during a local meeting with constituents.
His re-election bid is expected to spark fresh political activity in Rujumbura County, where younger politicians have been mobilizing support in anticipation of a possible succession. Muhwezi, however, remains confident in his record and long-standing relationship with the electorate.
Having served in various high-level government roles over the years, Muhwezi’s decision adds weight to the NRM’s campaign trail as the party seeks to consolidate its support in western Uganda. His announcement also underscores a growing trend of senior politicians framing upcoming bids as part of legacy completion.
