As Uganda’s financial sector continues to embrace digital transformation and alternative banking channels, dfcu Bank is strengthening efforts to bring banking services closer to customers through its Wenja Amaja campaign. The initiative aims to expand access through agent banking, merchant solutions, branches and digital platforms, enabling individuals and businesses to transact more conveniently.
In this interview, Mathias Jumba, Head of Integrated Channels at dfcu Bank, explains the vision behind Wenja Amaja, how it supports financial inclusion, and the opportunities it creates for customers, businesses and communities across Uganda.
Q1: What is the vision behind the Wenja Amaja campaign?
Mathias Jumba: Wenja Amaja is about making banking simpler, more accessible and more convenient for Ugandans. Our goal is to ensure customers can access essential banking services wherever they live, work or conduct business. At the same time, we are creating opportunities for agents, merchants and partners to grow alongside dfcu Bank.
Q2: What makes Wenja Amaja different from other banking campaigns?
Mathias Jumba: This campaign goes beyond creating awareness. It is designed to deepen financial inclusion by growing our customer base, expanding our agent and merchant network, mobilising savings and encouraging more Ugandans to participate in formal banking through channels that fit into their daily lives.
Q3: Why is agent banking a key part of dfcu’s strategy?
Mathias Jumba: Agent banking helps us extend our reach beyond traditional branches. Customers can access banking services within their communities, reducing the need to travel long distances. This makes everyday transactions faster and more convenient, especially for people who may not have a branch nearby.
Q4: What services can customers access through dfcu agents?
Mathias Jumba: Customers can carry out several transactions, including cash deposits and payments for selected services such as NWSC, NSSF, UEDCL Light, DStv, GOtv and Jubilee Insurance, among others. These services are designed to make banking more convenient and accessible.
Q5: Who can participate in the Wenja Amaja campaign?
Mathias Jumba: The campaign is open to both existing and new dfcu customers. It also provides opportunities for current and prospective agents, merchants, Super-Dealers and eligible staff who support customer acquisition and the growth of our agent and merchant network.
Q6: What opportunities does Wenja Amaja create for businesses?
Mathias Jumba: Businesses can benefit by opening or maintaining dfcu business accounts, accessing payment solutions and improving how they receive and manage payments. The campaign connects businesses to a broader financial ecosystem designed to support growth and efficiency.
Q7: Why should businesses consider becoming dfcu agents?
Mathias Jumba: Becoming a dfcu agent creates an opportunity for businesses to earn additional income while attracting more customers. It enables entrepreneurs to provide essential banking services within their communities while partnering with a regulated financial institution.
Q8: How does dfcu maintain trust and security across its banking channels?
Mathias Jumba: Trust is at the heart of banking. dfcu Bank operates under the regulation of the Bank of Uganda, and customer deposits are protected by the Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda up to UGX 10 million. We also ensure that all customer onboarding, rewards and partnerships go through verification and compliance processes.
Q9: What would success look like when the Wenja Amaja campaign concludes?
Mathias Jumba: Success will mean more Ugandans accessing banking services conveniently, more businesses adopting dfcu payment solutions, and a stronger agent and merchant network supporting financial inclusion across the country.
Q10: What is your message to Ugandans?
Mathias Jumba: Whether you want to open an account, grow your business, become a dfcu agent or access convenient banking services, Wenja Amaja provides an opportunity to grow with dfcu. We encourage Ugandans to visit their nearest dfcu branch, engage with a dfcu agent, or call 0800 222000 or 0800 777000 to learn more.
