Cameroon government officials have assured the public that President Paul Biya, who is 91 years old, is in good health, despite widespread speculation on social and mainstream media.
Since his official visit to China over a month ago, Biya has not made any public appearances, prompting citizens to demand evidence of their longtime leader’s well-being.
A trader in the capital expressed concern, stating, “He is our president, and if anything is wrong with him, we deserve to know. We are pleading with the government to provide clarity on his health.”
Biya was last seen in Beijing during the Africa-China Leaders Forum before heading to Europe for a private visit. The uncertainty surrounding his status has led some citizens to question whether he is even alive, accusing the government of withholding crucial information.
“We need the government to prove to us his whereabouts; it is our right to know,” another trader commented.
While officials have not indicated if Biya will make a public appearance in Switzerland, his supporters continue to hold rallies urging him to run for office again, even as he remains silent on the matter.
