Pilsner Lager, a prominent brand under Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), has bolstered preparations for the upcoming 29th Coronation Anniversary of the Tooro Kingdom with a contribution of UGX 100 million. The annual event, known as Empango, will take place on September 12th, commemorating the day when the Omukama of Tooro, Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, ascended to the throne at the tender age of three.
The announcement was made during a meeting attended by the Omukama, UBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo, Tooro Kingdom’s Minister of Culture Hon. Peter Sunday, and other key representatives from both UBL and the Kingdom. During the meeting, Kilonzo congratulated King Oyo on reaching his 200th anniversary and expressed UBL’s pride in associating with Tooro’s rich heritage.
“Uganda Breweries, which recently celebrated its 78th anniversary, is honored to be part of Tooro’s remarkable legacy. This celebration is a testament to the spirit of resilience that has sustained the strongest dynasties, and we are proud to have been part of your progressive journey over the years,” Kilonzo remarked.
He also highlighted UBL’s close collaboration with farmers in the Tooro Kingdom, who supply key raw materials for the production of iconic brands like Pilsner Lager. Kilonzo noted that UBL sources over 1,000 tonnes of barley, 1,500 tonnes of sorghum, and 5,000 tonnes of maize from the region annually, paying over UGX 8.7 billion to farmers in Kamwenge, Kabarole, and Bundibugyo. He further committed to doubling the sourcing of barley and increasing maize sourcing by 15% in the coming years.
The 29th Coronation Anniversary is anticipated to be a grand affair, featuring various cultural displays, rituals, and festivities celebrating Tooro Kingdom’s history and resilience. Edgar Kihumuro, Brand Manager of Pilsner Lager, reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to celebrating Uganda’s cultural heritage.
“We are always proud to be part of celebrations that highlight the rich traditions of the Tooro people. This contribution underscores our dedication to supporting and preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage,” Kihumuro stated.
Pilsner Lager’s substantial contribution is expected to ensure the success of the upcoming celebrations, further strengthening the ties between the brand and the Tooro Kingdom.
