Uganda has recorded a substantial decline in exports, amounting to Shs820.078 billion, as revealed in the latest Performance of Economy Report for June 2024.
This sharp drop marks a concerning trend for the country’s trade balance and overall economic stability. The report, released by the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, highlights several factors contributing to the decline.
Key among these is a reduction in agricultural exports, which have traditionally been Uganda’s economic backbone. Coffee, tea, and fish exports saw significant drops due to fluctuating global prices, adverse weather conditions, and disruptions in supply chains.
These sectors have been particularly vulnerable to the impact of climate change, which has resulted in lower yields and a reduction in the quality of produce.
Additionally, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and the rising cost of production, driven by higher fuel and input prices, have further exacerbated the situation.
The depreciation of the Ugandan shilling against major international currencies also made Ugandan goods less competitive in global markets, contributing to the overall decline in export revenue. The reduction in exports has raised concerns among economists and policymakers about the potential impact on Uganda’s economic growth.
With exports being a key driver of foreign exchange earnings, the decline could lead to a wider trade deficit and put pressure on the country’s foreign reserves.
This situation could, in turn, lead to inflationary pressures, affecting the cost of living for Ugandan citizens. In response to the alarming figures, the government is expected to review its export promotion strategies.
Emphasis may be placed on diversifying the export base, improving value addition in agriculture, and exploring new markets to cushion the economy from such shocks in the future.
As Uganda grapples with this economic challenge, the need for strategic interventions has never been more urgent to safeguard the country’s economic prospects.
